During the course of excavation for the redesign of Washington Square Park, the city’s Parks Department has uncovered human bones – at least four intact burials, and seven complete skeletons. The park was used as a burial ground for the poor in the early 1800s. The Parks Department has said that the plans for the redesign have been revised in order to leave the bones in place. Neighbors and community groups who opposed the redesign in the first place are protesting what they call “desecration” by the city. Some in these groups are urging the city to cease their reconstruction efforts.
